CBJ Gallery › ARRAS OF THE MOIRAI

ARRAS OF THE MOIRAI

$12,500.00

ARRAS OF THE MOIRAI is a triptych comprised of 3 cradled wood panels, each measuring 4x7 feet. The work installed as pictured with three inches in between each panel measures 12.5x7 feet.

Arras of the Moirai = Weaving of the Fates

Arras  /’eres/  noun    a rich tapestry, typically hung on the walls of a room or used to conceal an alcove.

Moirai   /’moi-ruh/   noun   THE MOIRAI were the three goddesses of fate who personified the inescapable destiny of man. They assigned to every person his or her fate or share in the scheme of things. Their name means "Parts."

The three Moirai:

Clotho (/ˈkloʊθoʊ/, Greek Κλωθώ [klɔːˈtʰɔː] – "spinner") spun the thread of life from her Distaff onto her Spindle.

Lachesis (/ˈlækɪsɪs/, Greek Λάχεσις [ˈlakʰesis] – "allotter" or drawer of lots) measured the thread of life allotted to each person with her measuring rod.

Atropos (/ˈætrəpɒs/, Greek Ἄτροπος [ˈatropos] – "inexorable" or "inevitable", literally "unturning", was the cutter of the thread of life. She chose the manner of each person's death; and when their time was come, she cut their life-thread with her shears.

Artist’s Reflection:

“This piece is best experienced when the viewer can shift perspective between distance and very, very close proximity….  as in life, when very, very close to a situation, one can see the multiple colors and layers of that specific experience in detail … it feels like the characteristics of that section are complete and all encompassing and it can be pleasurable to become absorbed … or from that intimate vantage point, when looking outward at another section of the painting (or life experience), it can seem that the rest of the composition is chaotic … but with distance, the balance becomes more clear … and a pattern emerges … both viewpoints are valuable … as the “big picture” is comprised of many unique layers of experience … and this large piece is comprised of many overlapping layers of paint.” -CBJ
